Marriage Documents Checklist for Foreigners in Georgia

Before you travel to Georgia or book your registration date, use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need. Missing or improperly prepared documents are the most common reason for delays or refusal at the Justice House — our lawyers review every document in advance to prevent this.

Documents Required for All Couples

  • Valid passport for each party (must be valid, not expired, at the time of registration)

  • Official Georgian translation of both passports (required for foreign citizens; we arrange this locally)

  • Completed marriage application form (prepared and submitted by our office on your behalf)

Additional Documents — Depending on Your Situation

If you were previously married and are now divorced

  • Official divorce certificate or court decree confirming the marriage was legally dissolved

  • Certified translation of the divorce certificate into Georgian (if not already in Georgian or English)

If your previous spouse is deceased

  • Death certificate of the former spouse

  • Certified translation, if required

If you have changed your legal name

  • Legal name change certificate or equivalent document, plus any related documents that reflect your current legal identity

If required by your home country / requested by Georgian authorities

  • Certificate of no impediment to marriage / certificate of marital status (single, divorced, or widowed), issued by your home country's competent authority

Note: Not every nationality is required to submit every document above — Georgian authorities' requirements can vary depending on your country of citizenship. Our lawyers confirm the exact list that applies to your specific case during the free initial consultation, so you don't prepare documents you don't actually need.

What You Do NOT Need

  • No residency permit or Georgian visa is required

  • No witnesses are required

  • No Power of Attorney is required for the marriage registration itself (both parties must be present in person)

  • No waiting period — registration can take place the same day documents are ready

Document Preparation We Handle for You

  • Certified translation of passports and civil status documents into Georgian

  • Notarization, where required

  • Verification that all documents meet the Justice House's exact formatting requirements

  • Coordination of apostille and further certified translation if the certificate will later be used abroad
